In the year 821, Ningbo - then named Mingzhou - was the administrative centre of Eastern Zhejiang. The city was based in an area bounded by 3 rivers. This area is called SanJiangKou / 三江口 which means Three River Mouth. This is still the city centre area of Ningbo.
